German universities either accept applications directly through their own portal or via Uni-Assist. Most master's applicants use Uni-Assist for the first application; TUM, RWTH and Heidelberg accept direct applications.

This is your formal application to be admitted to a study program.

Every bachelor's, master's and PhD applicant.
- APS certificate
- IELTS/TOEFL/PTE score
- Bachelor's degree + transcripts (for master's)
- Language proficiency for the target program (DSH/TestDaF for German programs)

- Draft SOP (600–900 words) tailored per program
- Request LORs from professors/managers 6–8 weeks in advance
- Upload documents in requested formats (PDF, size limits)
- Pay application fees (€75 first + €30 per additional via Uni-Assist)
- Submit before deadline (typically 15 July for winter, 15 January for summer)
- Track application status online
